In the Old Testament, the Holy Spirit “came upon” (Numbers 11:25- 70 elders; Judges 14:6- Samson). Now in the New Testament the Holy Spirit dwells in the believer (John 14:17).

1. God instructs us to be filled with the Spirt in Ephesians 5:15-21

To be filled with the Spirit: to be under the influence, the control of the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 5:18)

2. How are we filled with God’s Spirit?

• We get filled with spiritual things: teaching, admonishing, submitting to one another, worshipping and thanking (Colossians 3:15-17)
• Surrender, commitment to doing God’s will (over and above your will) through prayer (Acts 1:14; Acts 4:29)
• Desire for God’s Spirit leadership and choosing to depend on Him (Romans 8:14)

In response, God will:

• Give us wisdom and understanding of his will (Ephesians 5:10,15,17)
• Authority and power to do his will: live a godly life (Romans 8:4,13); to overcome in time of trials (Nehemiah 8:10 – Joy of the Lord our strength); to do God’s work (Acts 1:8; 4:31-Boldness)
• Passion and devotion to God – worship (Philip 3:3); desire for the things of God and to obey God (Matthew 4:1-2, Luke 4:1)
• God works miracles in you and through you (Galatians 3:5)
